General Questions

Cost, timeline, licensing, and service area. The stuff you want to know first.

How much does a home remodel cost in Los Angeles?

Every project is different. A bathroom remodel typically starts around $15,000 to $35,000. A kitchen remodel ranges from $30,000 to $85,000 depending on the scope. A full home remodel can run $100,000 or more. ADUs range from $150,000 to $350,000. We come to your home, look at the space, and give you a detailed written estimate so you know exactly what to expect before any work starts.

How long does a typical construction project take?

It depends on the project. A bathroom remodel takes 3 to 5 weeks. Kitchens run 6 to 10 weeks. Room additions take 3 to 5 months. ADUs and new construction take 8 to 18 months including permits. We give you a realistic timeline before we start and keep you updated throughout.

Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

Yes. Luz Builders Inc. holds California Contractor License #1151171. We are fully bonded and carry general liability insurance and workers compensation on every job. You can verify our license on the California CSLB website.

Process & Project Questions

What to expect before, during, and after your project.

How does your process work from start to finish?

It starts with a free consultation where we visit your property and discuss your project. Then we put together a detailed plan with design, permits, timeline, and cost. Once you approve, our crew starts construction. We keep you updated throughout and do a final walkthrough before we call it done. One team manages everything from start to finish.

How do I know if I need a permit for my project?

In Los Angeles, most construction projects that involve structural changes, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical work require permits. Cosmetic updates like paint, hardware, or replacing fixtures usually do not. If you are not sure, just ask us. We will tell you honestly whether your project needs a permit.

Can I stay in my home during construction?

In most cases, yes. For a kitchen or bathroom remodel, you can usually stay in the house with some temporary adjustments. For larger projects like full home remodels or additions, we will discuss the best approach with you before we start. We always try to minimize disruption to your daily life.

What happens if we go over budget or timeline?

We do everything we can to stay on budget and on schedule. If anything unexpected comes up, like hidden water damage or a structural issue behind a wall, we tell you immediately and discuss options before doing any additional work. There are no surprise charges on our jobs.

Do you provide design services or just construction?

We do both. Our team helps with design, material selection, and layout planning. For more complex projects, we work with architects and designers to create the exact look you want. Either way, you approve the design before we start building.

What kind of warranty do you offer?

We stand behind our work. We offer a warranty on all labor and workmanship. The specific terms depend on the project, and we go over everything with you before construction starts. Manufacturer warranties apply to all materials and fixtures we install.

Choosing the Right Contractor

What to look for, what to avoid, and how we do things differently.

How do I choose the right general contractor?

Check three things: license, insurance, and references. In California, every contractor should have an active CSLB license you can verify online. Make sure they carry general liability and workers comp insurance. Ask for photos of recent projects and talk to past clients if you can. Be careful with contractors who ask for large deposits upfront or refuse to pull permits.

How much should I put down as a deposit?

California law limits contractor deposits to $1,000 or 10% of the total contract price, whichever is less. Any contractor asking for more than that upfront is a red flag. We follow the law and structure payments around project milestones so you only pay as work is completed.

What is the difference between a general contractor and a handyman?

A general contractor is licensed by the state to manage construction projects of any size. We pull permits, coordinate subcontractors, handle inspections, and take responsibility for the entire project. A handyman is typically limited to smaller jobs under $500 in California and cannot pull permits or do work that requires a license.

Do you use subcontractors or your own crew?

We use our own experienced crew for the core construction work. For specialized trades like plumbing, electrical, and HVAC, we work with licensed subcontractors we have trusted for years. We manage everyone on site and take responsibility for all the work.
